Horseradish
HORSERADISH (Armoracia rusticana): This plant is a perfect example of food as medicine. Popular since the middle ages, this stimulating root native to Europe has been used as a digestive bitter, being consumed as a condiment, extract, and even in ceremonial settings. Horseradish is part of the five bitter herbs eaten by Jewish people during Passover. Another traditional application of this food medicine, is combining it with wine to stimulate the whole nervous system and cause perspiration. Horseradish is an effective anti-inflammatory when used internally and topically, by bringing blood to the affected area. Along with its anti-microbial constituents this root is an expectorant found effective when treating respiratory illnesses.
